After graduating from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1975, Kevin was in private law practice for almost 50 years, first in Minnesota and then in Colorado, concentrating on estate planning, estate and trust administration, and serving as an expert witness. At the end of March, 2022, Kevin retired from the active practice of estate planning and administration. In July 2022, Kevin created Kevin D. Millard LLC and now limits his work to serving as a consulting or testifying expert on trust and estate issues.

Kevin has served as an expert on:

• The application or interpretation of specific provisions of the Colorado Probate Code and the Colorado Uniform Trust Code;
• The application or interpretation of specific provisions of the Internal Revenue Code, including the calculation and apportionment of federal transfer taxes;
• A trust and estate lawyer's standard of care;
• The reasonableness of the fees of a personal representative or trustee, or of the lawyer for a personal representative or trustee;
• Breach of fiduciary duty by an agent, trustee, personal representative, or other fiduciary;
• Whether a beneficial interest in a trust may be reached by the beneficiary's creditors;
• The calculation of damages in breach of fiduciary duty and legal malpractice cases;
• The treatment of trusts as property or an economic circumstance in dissolution of marriage cases.
